How to Create a Dining Space Made for Holiday Hosting

There’s something special about gathering around the table during the holidays. Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas celebrations, Sunday brunch or an impromptu evening with friends — this is the time of year when our dining spaces really earn their keep.

For interior designer Suzanne Christie, creating a successful dining space starts with understanding how her clients actually live and entertain. A beautiful dining room isn’t simply about squeezing in enough chairs. It should make people feel comfortable, encourage conversation and make entertaining feel effortless.

And when it’s designed well, it will work just as beautifully for a quiet dinner at home as it does for a houseful of holiday guests.

Start With the Way You Entertain

Before choosing furniture, think about how you actually use your dining space.

Perhaps you regularly host a large extended family and need a table that expands when everyone arrives. Maybe you prefer smaller dinner parties, or your kitchen dining area is where family and friends naturally congregate.

Your room should be designed around your life.

Good space planning considers the size and shape of the room, traffic flow, seating requirements and how the dining area relates to the rooms around it. That becomes particularly important in today’s open-plan homes, where dining, kitchen and living spaces often need to work together.

Find the Right Table

The dining table is usually the largest piece in the room, so proportion matters.

You need enough space to seat everyone comfortably without making guests — or the person serving dinner — navigate an obstacle course of chairs.

Rectangular tables are a natural choice for longer rooms and larger gatherings, while round and oval tables can be wonderful for conversation and work particularly well in smaller spaces. If your guest list changes throughout the year, an extendable table gives you flexibility without overwhelming the room every day.

And don’t discount a breakfast nook or banquette. With beautiful upholstery, a distinctive table and the right lighting, an informal dining area can become one of the most inviting places in the house.

Make the Chairs Interesting — and Comfortable

If you want people to linger over dinner, comfort matters.

Upholstered dining chairs bring softness to a room and offer another opportunity to introduce color, pattern and texture. Host chairs can be different from the remaining seating, or you can combine complementary styles for a more collected look.

This is also one place where fabric selection makes a difference. Performance fabrics can provide the look and feel of beautiful upholstery while standing up to the realities of family dinners, grandchildren and the occasional glass of red wine.

Create Atmosphere With Lighting

Dining room lighting should do much more than illuminate the table.

A beautiful chandelier or pendant can become the focal point of the entire room, but getting the scale and placement right is important. A fixture that is too small can disappear; one that overwhelms the table can make the room feel uncomfortable.

Whenever possible, put dining room lighting on a dimmer. You’ll appreciate brighter light when setting the table, but once your guests arrive, softer lighting instantly changes the atmosphere.

Wall sconces, lamps on a buffet and accent lighting can add another layer of warmth — particularly during evening gatherings.

Dress the Windows

Window treatments are one of the easiest ways to make a dining room feel finished.

Custom drapery can add drama and softness, while Roman shades provide a tailored alternative. Layering treatments can give you even greater control over privacy and natural light.

Fabric also creates an opportunity to connect the room’s colors and patterns. A beautiful drapery fabric might echo the upholstery on the dining chairs, pick up a color from the artwork or introduce a completely new pattern that brings the room to life.

Make Storage Beautiful

If you’ve ever hosted a large holiday dinner, you already know the value of having serving pieces, linens and glassware close at hand.

A buffet, sideboard or display cabinet provides practical storage, but it can also be a beautiful part of the design. Look beyond matching furniture sets. A painted cabinet, rich wood finish, interesting hardware or contrasting material can give the room far more personality.

The surface also provides the perfect spot for lamps, artwork, flowers or seasonal decorations.

Give the Room Some Personality

Not everything in a dining room needs to revolve around the table.

Artwork, wallpaper, mirrors and architectural details can transform a simple dining area into a memorable room. A large piece of art can establish the entire color palette, while wallpaper can introduce pattern and character without taking up an inch of floor space.

And don’t be afraid of color. Dining rooms are wonderful places to use richer shades, dramatic patterns or finishes you might hesitate to use elsewhere.

Add the Finishing Touches

Once the major pieces are in place, the details bring everything together.

A generously sized rug grounds the dining table and chairs. Artwork and accessories make the room personal. Flowers, greenery and candles add life and warmth.

At holiday time, you shouldn’t need to completely redecorate the room. If you already have a beautiful foundation, a few seasonal touches can create all the festive atmosphere you need.

A Room for More Than the Holidays

The holidays may provide the inspiration to finally tackle a dining room that isn’t quite working, but good design should last long after the decorations have been packed away.

The best dining spaces feel just as comfortable over morning coffee as they do filled with family and friends for a celebration.

Working with a professional interior designer can help you bring all those elements together — furniture, lighting, window treatments, rugs, color, artwork and accessories — into a room that looks beautiful, functions effortlessly and feels unmistakably yours.
